I am writing in regard to the proposed repeal of the school voucher program. During the past legislative session, Sen. Stiles took a position in opposition to the school voucher program, a position with which I strongly agreed. Now, as I understand it, the senator has changed her position, and has taken the stance that it is bad policy to reverse legislative measures recently enacted. I cannot disagree more.
A bad legislative initiative is still a bad legislative initiative. Many Seacoast residents voted for Sen. Stiles in the recent election because of her position in opposition to this bill, among others. I am sure that they will be disappointed, as am I, that she has now changed her mind. In addition, many of those responsible for promoting this bill and others were not re-elected, an indication of the public’s opposition to their political agenda. That Sen. Stiles would consider reversing her position, not because she has had a change of heart on the issue, but because she believes that the Legislature should not reverse recently enacted measures, is disingenuous at best. It speaks of party politics, not belief in good policy. I urge Sen. Stiles to vote for the repeal of the school voucher bill.
